The main question coming out of To All The Boys 3’s ending is whether or not Lara Jean and Peter will stay together but, whether they do, don’t, or that question is never answered, the fact it’s reached this point is what’s important. That Lara Jean is a person who can choose to go to New York City, to choose a different college from what was initially planned, and to forge her own sense of identity and individualism is key to her character arc. The entirety of the To All The Boys movies aren’t just about her and Peter’s romance, but about her developing as a person, coming out of her shell, and learning how to love someone in real, tangible terms: in real life, not on the page.
That means the ending of To All The Boys: Always & Forever leaves things nicely open for Lara Jean; with Peter or without him, she has a bright future as a person and a writer, who could have many different loves and relationships because of her experiences over the course of these three movies. In some ways her journey comes full circle — to began with her writing love letters, so it’s only fitting that it ends with her committing to writing them, only this time as part of a committed relationship — but at the same time, it’s open-ended and well-poised for her story to go in any direction she wants it to. To All The Boys: Always & Forever doesn’t give a huge amount of focus to its other characters, since there’s so much to tackle between Lara Jean and Peter, but it does give fitting endings to most of its supporting players. The same can be said for Gen, whose redemption, which started in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, is really completed in Always & Forever’s ending. Not only do she and Chris learn to put their vast differences aside and become close again, but she and Lara Jean are headed to NYU together, where they can actually be friends. Gen’s growth is cemented in, of all things, a line about shoes. In To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, a line about Lara Jean’s boots showed her as the cruel, mocking, stereotypical popular girl. In almost the exact same spot in To All The Boys 3, Gen compliments Lara Jean’s shoes, which not only further bolsters the latter’s choice to go to NYU (because of her wish to wear commuter shoes) but it also shows how much more genuine Gen has become, shedding the protective layer of meanness she covered herself in, allowing herself to be more open and true to who she really is.

Lara Jean’s friend Lucas, meanwhile, will be going to college reasonably close by, promising to visit her every weekend.
One key character not explored here is John Ambrose, who is missing from To All The Boys 3, which isn’t too much of a surprise as his story was wrapped-up in To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You’s ending. However, the book version of Always & Forever sheds some light on this fate, as he’s dating a girl named Dipti, whom he met at the Model UN. It’s safe to say, then, that John moved on from Lara Jean, and was able to find happiness and love with someone else.

At the same time, there’s definitely scope for more to be explored between the two of them, should To All The Boys 4 ever happen. With Lara Jean headed to NYU, then there’s certainly a chance to follow her adventures in New York. Doing so would not only allow the franchise to show a different side to the character, looking at how she changes at college and being away from most of her old friends and her boyfriend, but the change of setting would allow the movie to not simply reference or briefly include New York, but have it take center stage.
Then, of course, there’s the big question that To All The Boys 4 could answer, which is whether or not Lara Jean and Peter stay together. There are a few options a sequel could take with examining their relationship now they’re at college, whether that’s picking up just a few months later, having several time skips that chart their relationship over the course of college, and jumping to near the end and delivering a more concrete answer on what happens to them and what comes next. Whether that needs a resolution, though, is another matter, and likely up to personal tastes. Most importantly, it depends whether author Jenny Han ever writes a fourth book. While the possibility hasn’t been ruled out, there isn’t anything official in the works yet, and this is being sold as the end of the story for now. If Han were to write another novel in the series, then it’s almost certain Netflix would adapt it, but until that happens it’s difficult to see a brand new story going ahead.
