Shortly before her 15th birthday, while celebrating Oktoberfest in her hometown, she was discovered by Louisa von Minckwitz of Louisa Models. Tilla Lindig, a Munich and London based couture label as well as designer of happycoat of which Claudia Schiffer is equally a fan, first booked her. Although planning to study accounting when she left high school, Stegner moved to Paris to pursue modeling afterwards instead.

Stegner, the daughter of Günter Stegner, the Director Central and Eastern Europe for LSI Corporation, and Erika Stegner, an accountant, was raised in an animal-loving household with many dogs alongside her older sister Jeanette, who currently works in film production. For seven years she was a child model, appearing in commercials and children’s catalogs, and for nine years was trained in dance.
In high school she discovered a passion for playing basketball, and eventually she joined a club team in Munich. Being 180cm tall by that time, she was naturally fit for the sport; her classmates even called her «Beanpole» because of her towering height.
The chance discovery
Julia Stegner had a towering height of 180 cm and this naturally made her inclined towards sports. She was a good basketball player and had also joined a club in Munich. The turn in her life came when Julia was sighted by a person from Louisa Models. The story goes that when Julia was just about 15 years old, she was celebrating the Oktoberfest in her hometown of Munich.

That was her lucky day since Louisa von Minckwitz who owned Louisa Models Agency discovered her and soon Julia was booked by clothes brand. Till Lindig was a Munich and London-based couture label and designed a happy coat that gave Julia her first break. Her first modeling assignment was in Paris and Julia had to relocate there for it.
